Ecological Clerk of Works (ECW)

An Ecological Clerk of Works is often required to monitor a development project where there is a likelihood of disturbance to sensitive species and/or habitats.  HEL is able to provide suitably experienced and qualified ecologists to act as ECWs on any development project.  We have a wealth of experience in undertaking this role, ensuring that planning conditions and current legislation are adhered to.  In addition to a general ECW role, HEL has experience in relation to specific species such as otter, bats, badger and great crested newt.

Case Study – Ravenscraig Regeneration Project

HEL have been engaged as Ecological Clerk of Works for the Ravenscraig regeneration project since 2000. This is one of the largest regeneration projects in Europe, covering 450 hectares (1,125 acres). Ravenscraig will be the first new town in Scotland for over 50 years and Ravenscraig will become home to over 10,000 people. In addition to the new homes, the project will involve the provision of a town centre with 84,000 sq m of retail and leisure space,  up to 216,000 sq m of business and industrial space, major parkland areas, a new transport network, new sports facility, a new college campus and two new schools.

HEL have been commissioned by Ravenscraig Ltd to ensure compliance of ecological planning conditions and Scottish Government/Scottish Natural Heritage licensing throughout the project.  In addition, we ensure project adherence to current nature conservation legislation and provide detailed project design specifications with respect to wildlife and open spaces.  We have designed appropriate mitigation measures for a number of ecological features throughout the site, including habitats and flora, protected mammal species, birds, amphibians and invertebrates.  This has included integrating the needs of wildlife within the regeneration infrastructure, as well as helping to establish a substantial community nature park, which will provide habitat for many of the site’s ecological features.  We are also responsible for the review of contractors’ method statements and perform routine inspection and supervision of contractors works.
